Made for Canadian businesses.
Payroll rules differ across the country, so we're adding one province at a time. Ontario works today, including its rules for overtime, vacation pay, and public holiday pay. The rest are coming. If your business is somewhere else, you can't use Free Payroll just yet, and we'd rather say so up front.

Blue means available now. Everything else is coming soon. Quebec has its own pension and parental insurance plans, so it will take a little longer.
What it does, and what it doesn't.
A free tool is only worth using if you know where it stops.
It does
- Calculates pay and deductions
- Generates pay stubs
- Prepares remittance summaries
- Prepares T4s and ROE worksheets
- Sends reminders
- Tracks year-to-date totals
It doesn't
- Send direct deposits. You pay your team yourself.
- File or pay the CRA for you. You do that, and we show you what and when.
- Handle taxable benefits, pensions, or garnishments.
- Work outside Ontario yet. More provinces are coming, and Quebec will take longer.
Need something more complex? We can point you to a full-service payroll provider.
Why is it free?
We're Discount Payments, a company that helps small businesses with payment processing. We built Free Payroll because small businesses deserve a simple, no-cost tool, and because we'd like to earn your trust.
Maybe one day you'll want to talk to us about card payments. Only if you want to. Your employees' information is never used for marketing.
Discount Payments is an independent sales agent of Fiserv/Clover and may later offer payment processing to business owners who ask for it.
Questions you might have
Is it really free? What’s the catch?
It really is free: no trial, no per-employee fees, no credit card. There’s no catch. We’re a payment processing company, and we’d like to earn your trust. If you ever want to talk about card payments, that’s up to you.
Does it file or pay the CRA for me?
No. You do, and we show you what to pay and when, plus the figures you need for your T4s.
Which provinces are supported?
Ontario today. More provinces are coming over time, and we’ll let you know here as each one opens.
How many employees can I have?
Free Payroll is built for small teams, up to about 10 employees.
Is my employees’ data safe, and will it be used for marketing?
We encrypt sensitive details like SINs, limit access by role, and log every important change. Your employees’ information is never used for marketing.
Can I invite my bookkeeper?
Yes. Bookkeepers get view access, and they can prepare payroll too if you allow it.
Can I leave and take my data?
Yes. You can export everything, any time.
